| VA Develops a Fall Prevention and Management
Aid |
 |
The Department of Veterans Affairs developed the Fall
Prevention and Management Aid specifically for use with
patients entering inpatient settings, acute care, and long
term care. Implied within the philosophy of the VA, both
patients and families are integrally involved in all aspects
of their care planning. The interventions are designed to be
implemented for patients with multiple fall risk factors and
those who have fallen. The interventions are also designed to
reduce the severity of injuries due to falls as well as to
prevent fall from reoccurring, supplementing standard fall
prevention interventions.

Assessment of Fall-Related Deaths and
Hospitalizations for Hip Fractures among Older Adults
Researchers from CDC's National Center for Injury
Prevention and Control (NCIPC) recently published an analysis
of data on fall-related deaths from 1987-1996 and
hospitalizations for hip fractures from 1988-1996 among adults
65 years and older in the United States. Analysis revealed
that rates of fall-related deaths among older adults increased
sharply with advancing age and were consistently higher among
men in all age categories. Men were 22% more likely than women
to sustain fatal falls.
