Infection control is an
effort shared by every healthcare provider--and one that
begins on the individual level. APIC is committed to
influencing, supporting, and improving the quality of
healthcare through the practice and management of infection
control and the application of epidemiology in all health
settings. It is with this mission in mind that each year
during the third week of October, APIC promotes the practice

Avoid Mosquito Bites to Avoid Infection
Human illness from the West
Nile virus is rare, even in areas where the virus has been
reported. The chance that any one person is going to become
ill from a mosquito bite is low. You can further reduce your
chances of becoming ill by protecting yourself from mosquito
bites.
To avoid mosquito bites: Apply insect
repellent containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) when

Alcohol Gels Top Soap for Hand Hygiene at Hospitals
Hospital workers might say
so long to good old soap-and-water scrubbing, as new research
finds that alcohol-based gels are an easier, more effective
way to disinfect dirty hands, experts say. And while the
alcohol rubs cost more up front, they can save money over time
by cutting down on potentially serious hospital-acquired
infections that can total thousands of dollars to treat,
according to research presented here Saturday at a meeting of
the American Society for Microbiology.

Inhibitex, Inc. Initiates Phase I Study of Veronate for
the Prevention of Staphylococcal Infections in Premature
Infants
Inhibitex, Inc. a
biopharmaceutical company focused on the prevention and
treatment of staphylococcal and other bacterial infection,
announced the start of a Phase I clinical trial of its lead
product, the start of a Phase I clinical trial of its lead
product, Veronate, for the prevention of staph infections in
premature infants. Inhibitex is developing Veronate (TM) to
reduce the risk of both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and
coagulase-negative staphylococcal infections in very low birth
