Training Tips and Comments:

Great Ideas for Annual Inservice and HIPAA Training

" We schedule our annual inservice over a 7 day period. It covers portions of two weeks to catch those who might be vacationing. We have at least one day that is available into evening hours, and one Saturday. This year we utilized a cruise theme. I sent out invitations (mandatory notices) weeks before the event, decorated our education center very nautially and played Carribean music. We gave each person a test packet of questions and an answer sheet. They went from station to station to view information on the display board with the major points of each topic. They had to clear 'customs' at the end. The staff loved the event. Only 11 out of 400 people didn't make it."

El Dorado, KS

"We have just instituted a raise delay policy for staff who have not completed annual mandatory training items by the times they are due. It has made our staff very aware of their responsibilities and eliminated tons of time spent chasing down those who are deliquent."

Sharon Taylor, RN, MS
Burgess Health Center
Onawa, IA

"We did something new this year for our annual education review. We developed storyboards for each of the topics as well as some extra's and had tests that went with each topic. It was set up for the whole month of May so that day, night, and weekend employees had access. They completed the test and placed them in a box. We had great compliance with this."

Andie Thomas, Education
Duplin General Hospital
Kenansville, NC

What are you doing about HIPAA?

"HIPAA training needs to go to all employees including volunteers, physicians, and contract staff, to the best of your ability. For our upcoming in-person training sessions, I am planning to provide an overview of HIPAA and then focus on our facility's policies and procedures that support the laws. I also plan to include the consequences of non-compliance. In the meantime, I am raising awareness by providing small pieces of information to different groups with 10-15 minute presentations during their meetings. I also started a newsletter to introduce HIPAA so that as we progress, staff will be able to see the changes that occur. It is important to work closely with your HIPAA team and Privacy Officer (and Security Officer if you have one)."
