CENTRAL SERVICE: The Role of Central Service in Infection Prevention
The primary goal of the Central Service department is to prevent the spread of microorganisms that can cause disease by ensuring all medical devices and instruments used in procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected or sterilized. To meet this goal, staff must be knowledgeable on essential safety practices and the fundamental principles involved in infection prevention.

Program Description
Learning Objective: Provide an overview for Central Service staff on infection prevention and safety practices, and the basic principles of cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing medical devices and instruments
As a member of Central Processing, your job is critical to the safety and well-being of our patients, and many departments will depend on you in order to deliver quality patient care.
Developed as an orientation tool for Central Service staff, this 15 minute video training program provides an overview of infection prevention and safety practices, and the basic principles of cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing medical devices and instruments.
Based upon the latest industry guidelines, protocols, and regulations including IAHCSMM, AAMI, AORN, OSHA, CDC, the FDA and CMS, this program highlights the following, and more:
- Infection prevention and safety protocols including Standard Precautions, hand hygiene, PPE, and safe work practices including the identification of health hazards
- Efficient workflow through the Central Service Department
- Basic principles behind cleaning, high-level disinfection and sterilization
