Each year, millions of procedures using moderate sedation are performed in ambulatory, ancillary, or acute care settings by clinicians other than anesthesia professionals. While many of these procedures may seem low risk, clinicians who are not properly trained may be putting patients at risk for unintended complications or medical errors.

Clinicians must be able to clearly distinguish between moderate sedation and the more dangerous states of deep sedation and general anesthesia; as well as determine the potential complex interactions between the agents used, a patient’s health, and drug sensitivities, so that they can act quickly to respond to the many complications that may occur.

This comprehensive training module will educate staff on the following:

• Pharmacology of medications/agents used
• How to safely deliver these medications
• Pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural assessment and monitoring of patients
• Safety and infection prevention protocols
• Proper documentation
• Current regulations, standards, recommended practices and guidelines that apply to the use of moderate sedation/analgesia
