Program Description

Learning Objective: To educate healthcare professionals on the very latest information available regarding evidence-based alternatives to the use of restraints; but if restraints are used how to conduct the 1 Hour Face-to-Face Evaluation, the roles and responsibilities of the care team, and the necessary documentation and reporting requirements

Restraints, Seclusion, and the 1 Hour Face-to-Face Evaluation

The use of restraints and seclusion should only be used in emergent situations. If restraints and seclusion are used, they should be utilized safely and with regard to the rights and dignity of the individual. Additionally, CMS mandates the performance of a 1 Hour Face-to-Face Evaluation, and Joint Commission Standards require evaluation and monitoring.

This video training program covers:

  • How to recognize and respond to signs of distress
  • Definition of restraints and seclusion
  • Personnel required to conduct the 1 Hour Face-to Face Evaluation
  • Conducting the 1 Hour Face-to-Face Evaluation
  • Monitoring the restrained or secluded patient
  • Staff and patient debriefing
  • Documentation and reporting requirements for CMS Regulations and The Joint Commission Standards

Providing Evidence-Based Care: Avoiding the Use of Restraints

The use of restraints in the health care setting can severely harm the physical and psychological status of the patient/caregiver relationship. Regulations by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and standards by The Joint Commission stress that the use of restraints is a last resort and that alternatives to restraints must be explored and implemented. Featuring leading expert Elizabeth Capezuti, PhD, RN, FAAN, this program highlights evidence-based strategies for alternatives to restraints.

After viewing this program staff will be able to answer these important questions:

  • What is and what is not considered a restraint?
  • What are the triggers that lead to problematic behavior?
  • How do you assess and evaluate the patient's behavior?
  • What are de-escalation techniques and how are they applied?
  • Why is appropriate monitoring and assessment essential?
  • What are practical alternative interventions?
  • What are the documentation requirements for CMS and The Joint Commission?
