The 2009 Patient Safety Goal #15 states that clinicians in the general hospital setting must learn to identify patients at risk for suicide, and safely manage those who admit after a suicide attempt or express intent during hospitalization.

Program Description


Learning Objective: To provide healthcare professionals with the tools required to recognize those at risk for suicide and respond appropriately so that individuals can get the help they need



FACT: Suicide or attempts of suicide by a patient in a staffed, round-the-clock health care setting is the #2 reported Sentinel Event.

FACT: CMS considers suicide a Never Event and reduces or eliminates payments when these events occur.

Suicide can have devastating consequences to the family, healthcare providers and the healthcare system. The fact is healthcare professionals are in a unique position to recognize and respond to individuals who are at risk, and as such have a clinical responsibility to do so.

With scenarios in inpatient, ambulatory and ED settings, this program will enable the viewer to:

  • Understand requirements and expectations related to the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal for suicide risk assessment and CMS regulations
  • Identify patients at risk for suicide
  • Determine and activate the appropriate level of response
  • Implement Suicide Precautions
  • Enhance clinical suicide screening skills
  • Properly document all assessments, reassessments and interventions
